The idealized current waveform for the two coil currents are square waves shifted 90° in phase. The slope of the current changes will be limited by the inductance and can have a dramatic effect on the performance of the motor. If the step sequence is reversed, one of the two current waveforms will be shifted 180° as the motor rotates the reverse direction. An observant participant might have noticed that only odd numbered states were used in the previous sequence and may ask why there are not even numbered states.
