This chart shows a comparison of a typical 5V, 1A motor driven from 5V in the L over R configuration, and a motor driven in the L over nR configuration using a series resistance equal to 4 times the motor coil resistance and 5 times the drive voltage, or 25V. The rise time is significantly reduced so it would be expected to be able to operate at higher speed. However, the additional dissipation in the added external resistance is not acceptable in today’s applications. What is needed is a drive that provides a faster rise time without the dissipation of the L over nR drive.
