Industrial Equipment Access

In an increasingly connected and intelligent plant floor, the need to maintain, monitor, or troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), motors or Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) in an electrical enclosure is becoming a common practice. This type of work could entail tasks like programming modifications to performing diagnostics. As more and more of this technology is designed into equipment today, the personnel required to service this technology expands beyond the standard qualified electrician role and into roles inhabited by machine operators, control engineers, IT personnel, and others. However, in order to perform work on equipment, personnel are often required to open the panel doors to secure a computer connection and keep the equipment energized. Many times, opening the panel door requires a qualified electrician to employ proper PPE and understand the risks when performing live work. However, whether it’s a qualified or unqualified electrical worker, opening an energized electrical enclosure poses the same serious safety risks.
