Networking landscape
Newer industrial systems are affecting the communication protocols. The manufacturing space is being presented with many types of Ethernet protocols with regional emphasis on Ethernet/IP in the Americas, Profinet in EMEA and a multitude of different ethernet implementations in the rest of the world. Like the process itself, the network that supports the manufacturing process grows and changes over time to keep pace with business needs. The result is an asset that is not all the same age. Some of the oldest parts of the network are legacy protocols that typically support communications between the end control elements and the controllers. As they age, they become harder to support for a number of reasons. This factor makes them an inherent vulnerability. So during a site assessment, it's very important to figure out which legacy protocols are in the customers network and what job they do today. This graphic shows the state of protocols in Industrial networks. What the chart depicts is a current state where approximately half of the network is already changed to various flavors of Ethernet protocols. The legacy portion is migrating slowly to Ethernet based on technology shift and business needs. Ethernet will replace all legacy fieldbus protocols in the future, although it may not ALL be the 4-pair version of Ethernet that is used today. It is important to note that Panduit will be here to support the customer's network migration journey to Ethernet and beyond.
