UL1449 is the primary standard for Surge Protection Devices or SPDs. Practically all North American surge standards now revolve around 3rd edition, and is now purposely aligned with other standards, including UL1283, 2008 National Electrical Code™ Article 285, NEMA LS-1, the ANSI/IEEE C62 documents and others. UL1449 specifically addresses design considerations for SPDs used in 50 to 60Hz AC electrical circuits of less than 1000V to protect against repeated voltage surge conditions created by events such as inductive load switching or lighting strikes.
