A typical application is shown in this slide with a three-phase bridge rectifier connected to a power supply with a phase-conductor voltage of 400 Vrms. The smoothing capacitor used has a capacitance of 940μF. A parallel circuit consisting of two J109 type charging resistors is used to limit the inrush current. Each charging resistor has a rated resistance of 100Ω at an ambient temperature of 25˚C. The parallel connection of two components is required in this case because of the large amount of energy that must be transferred to the capacitor during charging. A single J109 resistor would heat up to an undesirable extent and become highly resistive. This should be avoided, as the link-circuit capacitor would not be allowed to completely charged.
