In solar inverters, the inverter section itself is not the only place to gain efficiency from use of SiC. Most solar inverters precede the inversion phase with a boost section increasing the solar panel voltage and thus extending the usable period of sunlight. In the boost converter section of the PV inverter, SiC diodes from Wolfspeed can replace silicon devices. Through use of SiC for the boost diode, the reverse recovery currents in the Si PiN diode are eliminated from the system. This leads to near elimination of diode switching losses and a substantial reduction in the turn-on loss in the switch. The increase in efficiency enables more of the energy from the PV panels to be delivered to the end user.
