Understanding the Difference Between Surge Protectors and Circuit Breakers

Electrical appliances can feature a variety of protective technologies, but the two most common are surge protectors and circuit breakers. Let's explore the differences between these two essential safety components.

Surge Protectors

Surge protectors safeguard your electrical appliances from voltage spikes, which occur when a cord or appliance exceeds its rated voltage, potentially causing permanent damage. Commonly found in power strips like AC Connectors’ PSROT-072, surge protectors are ideal for protecting computers, TVs, entertainment systems, and office equipment. Voltage spikes often result from lightning storms or downed power lines. While not mandated by state or community regulations, surge protectors are highly recommended for protecting valuable electronics.

Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers, on the other hand, are mandated safety devices found in the electrical panels of homes, apartments, and workplaces. Their primary function is to prevent circuit overloads, which can cause overheating and fires. Overloading typically occurs when too many appliances run on one circuit or when a faulty appliance draws more current than necessary. Our circuit breaker-protected adapters offer an extra layer of safety. These adapters have a red reset button that pops out when overloaded. After addressing the issue, you can simply press the button back in to resume operation, saving you a trip to the main circuit panel.

Comparing the Two

While both surge protectors and circuit breakers offer protection, they address different issues:

  • Surge Protectors: Protect against voltage spikes
  • Circuit Breakers: Prevent circuit overloads by managing excess current (amps)

By understanding these differences, you can better protect your electrical appliances and ensure safety in your home or workplace.
