DO NOT ATTEMPT to Re-Create
Ever wonder what Captain America would look like if his suit and shield had Iron Man’s technology? Well, there’s an alternate Marvel Universe where this actually happens! In this universe, Iron Man dies during the Civil War event and Steve Rogers takes up the mantle of both Captain America and Iron Man. This version of Steve Rogers is known as Civil Warrior.
Hacksmith Industries has done several projects with Iron Man suits and Captain America’s shield over the years. This shield is the first project that combines both into one device. Check out the arc reactor shield and see how it was made in the video below!
How Does it Work?
This shield has three major features: an electromagnet that allows the shield to return to the wearer’s arm, LEDs to give the arc reactor its glow, and (maybe the best part) a laser so the wearer can fire Iron Man’s famous unibeam! Each of these features have some roots in previous Hacksmith projects that you can find on Maker.io.
The Electromagnet
Hacksmith Industries used powerful electromagnets to make climbing clamps to scale walls like Spider-Man. These were powerful enough to hold a person’s weight as they climbed walls. They also had LCD displays to show how much power ran through the clamps. This allowed the user to make sure they had enough power to stick to walls or if power had decreased enough to detach from walls.
The electromagnets in this shield only need to be powerful enough to hold the shield on the user’s arm, so the Spider-Man clamps that can hold a person would be overkill. Instead, the electromagnet uses a design more similar to the Captain America shield from a few years back. This saves power for more important things, like lasers!
The Arc Reactor
Two years ago, Hacksmith Industries made an Arduino-controlled arc reactor on Maker.io that worked as an ionized plasma generator. The arc reactor on the civil warrior shield works on a different concept in order to make the shield more durable and conserve power for the unibeam.
Instead, this arc reactor works more like the Rainbow Six Blitz Shield, which uses powerful LEDs that are strong enough to temporarily blind people (or permanently if you stare at them for too long). These LEDs are turned on and off by a push button trigger that the wearer can reach with their hand in the back of the shield.
The Laser
One of Civil Warrior’s ultimate moves is a unibeam attack that comes from his shield’s arc reactor. To recreate this unibeam, Hacksmith Industries teamed up with Styropyro, a fellow Youtuber who specializes in powerful lasers. The team collaborated with Styropyro in the past on Zarya’s particle cannon, which uses a Co2 tube laser. The laser in the Civil Warrior shield uses a more compact setup of 20 laser diodes in a grid. The power supply sits inside the shield and is actually so hot that it needs to be water-cooled! It uses a switch to be powered on and off like the LED arc reactor.
