Raspberry Pi 2 Receives a Minor Upgrade
2016-12-15 | By Maker.io Staff
There has been a lot of chatter in the Raspberry Pi forums regarding the Raspberry Pi 2 hardware, in particular the SoC. The Raspberry Pi 2 has indeed lost its original BCM2836 32-bit processor and has upgraded to the BCM2837 64-bit processor the same as the current Raspberry Pi 3. It looks like the transition had been made a few months ago without any official confirmation from the Raspberry Pi foundation. The current hardware revision for the Raspberry PI 2 is now 1.2.
With the new changes of the processor it is still not quite up to the Raspberry Pi 3 specification with only being clocked at 900MHz as opposed to the Pi3’s 1.2GHz and without any wireless capabilities. The new board revision accomplishes one thing and that is raw processing speed with 64-bit processing an extra caching.
It’s quite clear that the introduction of the newer Broadcom SoC was due to production costs as far less Raspberry Pi 2’s is being produced for the same $35 price as the Raspberry PI 3. Having said that, there is still a small demand for the Raspberry PI 2 board; particularly with industrial users and existing projects that use the Raspberry Pi 2. The new version also required the latest version of Raspbian OS; much like the Raspberry Pi 3 when it was released.
