IEC60601-1 3rd Edition is a standard that was created over a 10 year period from 1995 to 2005 with an international consensus. It represents a new state of the art in terms of safety standards in it’s flexibility and it’s protection for end users and patients. The scope of the 60601 medical standard has been amended and enlarged so it now included products that can be used without medical supervision: such as home healthcare. The standard was formally published internationally in 2005 under the title IEC60601-1:2005. It was later adopted under local standards for the EU, US, and Canada under each owns naming conventions. For the first time the US standard is not part of UL, but is now handled by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
