The engineer started the development by consulting key accounts in the technology, industrial and healthcare markets to understand the requirements for next generation power supplies. Industry standard footprints have developed within the Power supply industry for open frame construction power supplies, such as 2 x 3 inches, 2 x 4 inches and 3 x 5 inches, and the designers are pushing the boundaries within these package sizes, even creating the 2 x 3 standard. In this instance the engineer could see a market requirement for low power in a new smaller footprint which will, no doubt, become a new industry standard like the previous designs. A key requirement from the market research was to keep the profile as low as possible. In addition to the reduced size, component power supplies must be easy to integrate into end equipment. As an example, EMC compliance should be simple and customers are looking for power solutions with energy saving specifications to aid them in meeting energy standards for the end equipment and to reduce the cost of ownership. XP Power has published specifications to class a product as a ‘green power’ power supply and this product is designed to comply. Lastly, the engineer did not take short cuts to size reduction by having de-rating at low line input and higher temperature. This range follows the XP strategy to offer full power over wide ranges of input voltage and ambient temperature.
