PaLFI is an ideal device for close proximity range data loggers, sensors, and remote control applications. In medical applications, the low frequency interface could be used to non invasively configure devices such as hearing aids and implanted devices. Configuration data can be sent to the device without any power source requirement yielding long battery life and simplifying updates. The electromagnetic field generated from the base station provides power for a microcontroller and sensor allowing for battery-less operation. If a battery is used, the PaLFI can recharge it wirelessly through the human body. Containers and other objects with sensors attached can have the data logged into EEPROM memory and read wirelessly. TI low frequency half duplex technology is ideal for harsh environments including liquids and metals. Higher frequencies will see more of a reduction in read range when presented with these environments. PaLFI can be used to configure a product passively through the packaging. A single product can be manufactured and programmed with different configurations at the end of the production line, allowing for a streamlined process. There is no need for a battery in the product because the EEPROM can be written passively. PaLFI can operate as a stand alone low frequency transponder with memory that is readable and writeable as well. In an e-metering application, PaLFI can store the last values and be read even if power is not available or the meter is damaged. The PaLFI enables wireless configuration of the meter if settings or calibration data must be altered in the field.
