The block diagram shown on this slide integrates the functions of an electronic gas or water meter. In the middle is the processor, which is an MSP430 microcontroller. On the left-hand side is some kind of sensing; which could be ultrasonic sensing or it could be an LC-based flow meter. On the right-hand side are some of the communications modules that will connect to a home area network or local area work, and below are some advanced features like anti-tampering. These could include prepayment RFID, and motor control in the case of gas meters. Other options include Mbus and GSM/GPRS devices.
