MSP430 for Utility Metering Solutions Slide 16

To summarize the MSP430 for an electricity meter, the MSP430 is an ideal choice for electricity meters because it meets the most important objectives for the eMeter which are system cost optimization, accuracy, anti-tamper implementation, easy interfacing, quick time to market, and a flexible long-term platform that is scalable. The system cost optimization has integrated the Sigma/ Delta converters along with the differential inputs, and removed the need for level conversion. Also, low power simplifies and reduces the power design costs. Integrated RTC and LCD reduces total cost. Additionally, a single-phase AFE will provide an optimized implementation of one-phase meters in many applications. Sigma Delta converters with simultaneous sampling of current and voltage removes the need for compensation in the software. The MSP430 also has a hardware multiplier which gives better numerical results. It also has up to seven Sigma Delta ADCs and includes anti-tamper implementation. TI has many communication interfaces that integrate easily with low power RF solutions. The ESP engine, for a low cost, one-phase implementation is cost effective and supports fast time to market. Finally, TI has a very scalable solution going from one-phase to three-phase with anti-tamper with software that can be easily scaled.
