Humans, either as operators or end users, are the most common cause of ESD events. A simple act like walking across carpet can cause humans to build up enough charge, that, if discharged into an IC via touch, can damage the system. ESD voltages can reach 5,000 volts, but can be much higher in automotive, low humidity, and other extreme conditions.
