The DAC8760 and its family of devices were developed to solve a number of issues in the PLC and sensor transmitter market. First, there was a need for either current or voltage output DACs in programmable logic controllers 9PLCs) but manufacturers would not know which one would be needed until the module was deployed. The DAC8760 family solves this issue by allowing easy programming via SPI interface for voltage or current output, addressing this problem and allowing the output to quickly change to the specifications of the overall system. Also, if the PLC system wants redundancy measures implemented, the DAC8760 family can easily transmit both the same code on voltage and current output simultaneously. Size is always a concern with items such as sensor transmitters. With much larger integration of the traditional XTR current amplifier, the reference, and the DAC, the DAC8760 family accommodates space-constrained needs while sitting in a small 6 mm x 6 mm package. Accuracy is always a key with these applications and the DAC8760 family achieves it with a TUE of 0.1% FSR over the full extended Industrial temperature range. This key specification is higher accuracy than competitive offerings, which enables the PLC or sensor transmitter solution to achieve higher performance without calibration. Finally, reliability and diagnostic features are present on every module and typically are designed as discrete circuits, but having them integrated on the chip saves module area and time to design-in these features.
