Stepper motors are well suited for low torque applications that need precise position control, such as computer peripherals or numerically controlled machine tools. In these applications, steppers have several advantages. Since they have no brushes, they are highly reliable motors whose life is essentially determined by the life of the bearings or bushings in the motor. The control loop is very cheap since the motor is driven open loop without any position or speed feedback elements. Since the motor is a synchronous machine, speed control is simple. The motor configuration inherently provides good position control.
