What is firmware upgrade Over-The-Air (FOTA)? It is the capability to upgrade the user application that is running on the wireless sensor node (on the platform’s microcontroller), transferring the new application binary image through a wireless communication channel (so Over-The-Air). In this case, the wireless communication channel is a Bluetooth Low Energy link. The ST BlueMS application embeds this capability, using a proprietary communication protocol. From the menu options the user can start the FOTA process. A file selector will be open. The user needs to look for the new application binary image that will be transferred over the air. Binary images can be stored locally (if using an Android device) or on a web/cloud-based repository (like Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud). The user will then select the new binary image they would like the wireless sensor node to be upgraded to and the FOTA process will start. Once the application upgrade process is completed, the user will need to reboot the device, and the newly transferred application will be running on the wireless sensor node.
