A common mistake is to assume that old-style rotary potentiometers are the best fit for tight applications, but in many applications, the membrane sensor is better. One example of this is in valve opening. In the pictures to the right, notice how the membrane sensor is mounted immediately next to the valve piston, giving absolute and real-time feedback on the gate movement of the valve.
