Power Factor Correction Slide 2

To maximize power utilization, the types of power must be understood. In any electrical circuit or system, there are three components of power: apparent power, active power, and reactive power. Apparent power is equal to the combination of active power and reactive power. Reactive power is “unproductive” wasted power. Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuitry seeks to minimize reactive power. In a circuit with “perfect” PFC apparent power is equal to active power.
