Introducing the Skyworks Solutions Si87xx family, drop-in upgrade for many common optocouplers. The Si87xx family is a complete CMOS solution and brings many advantages over traditional optocouplers. In terms of reliability, the Si87xx brings the advantage of using materials and technologies that are immune to aging and environmental effects. Only standard, readily available CMOS process technologies are used, resulting in a much lower failure-in-time (FIT) rate compared to optical based solutions which require the use of specialized, exotic processes. In addition, the architecture used, and its inherently low parasitic capacitance, provides a large common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) improvement over optocouplers. The minimum CMTI can be improved by as much as 75%. The isolation technology used for the Si87xx family is based on Skyworks Solutions capacitive based isolation. This isolation is rated up to 5 kV withstand and is fully compliant with IEC 60747-5-2 including 10 kV surge protection. There is a wide range of orderable product options in the Si87xx family. The Si87xxA devices require lower input turn-on current and deliver similar CMTI performance as existing optocouplers. Alternatively, the Si87xxB products improve the common-mode transient immunity but require higher input turn-on current. Both of these groups are specified for 15 Mbps data rates. The Si87xxC devices are specified at the lower 1 Mbps data rate. All groups are available in multiple packages and different output configurations. Common applications for the Si87xx family include general I/O such as found in programmable logic controllers or data acquisition systems. Also, motor control systems and switch-mode power supplies can be improved with the higher reliability and performance of the Si87xx products.
