Existing power supply systems that have been used in automotive design up until 2018 do not have built-in diagnostics test and monitoring functions. Due to this limitation, the design will not comply with ASIL standards that are needed for most automotive applications. In order to meet ASIL requirements, a new re-designed PMIC is required that will have diagnostic and other features needed. Unfortunately, designing a new PMIC and getting it through all the qualifications is very cumbersome and difficult. Just the design phase of the new PMIC will require anywhere from two to four years. Having this in mind, ROHM developed a supervisor IC that will have all the features needed and it can work with existing PMICs already being used in the design. Adding this supervisor IC will not require full re-design of the power system. Instead, this IC will be designed as an add-on to the existing power system and will provide additional reliability and compliance to the ASIL standard.
