The PFB and the Data bypass do everything they can to speed up access to Flash, but branch operations are tougher to handle. The non-sequential address of the a branched instruction is going to require a full Flash Access Cycle unless it has been branched to previous instructions – which is common in the case of loops. This branch target is stored in the Branch Trail Buffer and can significantly increase performance in certain types of code with branches.
