A quadrature encoder, also known as a 2-channel incremental encoder, converts angular displacement of the motor into two pulse signals called quadrature outputs typically termed as Phase A and Phase B. They are called quadrature outputs, because they are 90° out of phase. By monitoring the relative phase of these two signals, the LPC29xx interface decoder can track the position and direction of rotation along with its velocity. In addition, a third channel, or index signal, can be used to reset the position counter.
