Medium power LEDs are becoming more popular as the LED manufacturers’ ability to improve the Lumen per Watt efficacy continued to increase. These LEDs, especially 0.5 W LEDs, are chosen for applications where higher power LEDs are too expensive or require too much PCB area. Using more 0.5 W LEDs can also help to distribute the light intensity over the whole application rather than having only few very bright spots with 1 W LEDs. The recently available BCR320U/BCR420U linear LED driver family is dedicated to driving these medium power LEDs. They are suitable for applications where LED currents of 100 mA to 250 mA are used.
