In addition to the DMA Controller, the innovative Event System in the XMEGA is the other main contributor to offloading the CPU. The Event System enables inter-peripheral signaling without CPU or DMA usage. The Event System provides 100% predictable and latency-free signaling system without the need for CPU cycles or interrupts. This is extremely powerful since it allows autonomous and predictable control of peripherals. Traditional solutions use interrupts to allow peripherals to signal to the CPU. The event system removes all this overhead and allows for one peripheral to signal and trigger actions in other peripherals when something happens. Up to eight peripheral signals can be transferred at the same time, no matter how busy the rest of the device is. Where most microcontrollers tend to be overloaded with data transfer and interrupts as they keep increasing integration, XMEGA offers a solution that increases predictability and bandwidth while cutting the CPU load and current consumption.
