AVR Studio is a full featured front-end integrated development environment (IDE), which is used for code development and debugging of AVR applications. It comes with an integrated Assembler and also integrates the free GCC compiler for AVR. In addition, third party vendors like IAR, Imagecraft, Rowley and others deliver development environments with powerful and efficient C compilers. Hardware tools range from low cost to high end debuggers, as well as full featured starter and evaluation kits. Microchip provides a long list of application notes and code examples for all their microcontrollers, including XMEGA. For each module and peripheral in XMEGA there is one application note with code examples, driver software and documentation on applied use. Simply download the application note, and read through the quick start section to get started. Additionally, application notes are continuously developed and released to support specific applications or customer requests.
