One of the key benefits of XMEGA and of the AVR microcontrollers in general, is the compatibility. Since tinyAVR, megaAVR, and XMEGA use the same AVR CPU, compilers, source code, and development tools can be re-used across any device. Only one set of tools is required for all AVR products. All XMEGA devices are 100% code compatible. This means that software that is developed and used on one XMEGA device, can be directly reused on other XMEGA devices without any changes. Developing can begin on any XMEGA, and be later switched to a different device with different memory and functions that match the final application specification perfectly. By using XMEGA as the common microcontroller platform across multiple projects, it is possible to reuse development experience, software, and hardware.
