Process control systems are often used in dangerous and noisy environments. Galvanic isolation is often required to ensure the reliability of the process control system. Isolation is required for both the power and signal lines. Dangerously high voltage levels are often present near a process control system, and the system needs to be protected from inadvertent exposure to these voltages. ADI technology currently provides protection of 2.5kVrms and 5kVrms for 1 minute, and a 560Vpk working voltage. The working voltage is the voltage that can be continuously applied across the isolator. A process control system often contains large distances between different nodes on the network, which can lead to differences in ground potentials that are large enough to damage standard components. Isolation will help provide protection against these ground potentials. Current surges on the ground path can also create common mode transient surges that lead to dangerously large differences in ground potentials. ADI Technology provides 25KV/µs common-mode transient protection.
