One of the benefits of the Power Monitoring ICs is to reduce the complexity and footprint of such solutions by integrating many components and features in one single package. The internal conductor converts the current into voltage without any contact thanks to the small and compact magnetic sensing. This allows the designer to get rid of the shunt resistors as well as the opto-isolators necessary for higher power applications. Many batteries these days can go even higher than 600 Vpk to power their power tools, big appliances and other white goods. Furthermore, there is no need to get a complicated power path with dual output supplies and regulators as the ACS37800 can regulate its own 3.3 V or 5 V power supply depending on what the application power rail is at. Power monitoring chips like the ACS37800 can also save the system some comparators as it features an overcurrent fault detection pin that can alert the MCU directly with a binary output. The fault being active at low, it can also be connected to the chip select pin of a power management chip to shut it down in time. Lastly, because power monitoring chips are calculating all the different power triangle components, the RMS and averaging by itself, the MCU is saving precious CPU cycles. So the solution can be made simpler with a smaller MCU requiring less power resources.
