Another form of external interference is electro-static discharge (ESD). More commonly known as static electricity, ESD is the shock received when a person touches a metal object after shuffling his or her feet across a carpet. Systems designers must be aware of the effects of ESD because the discharge will, in many instances, cause errors in the data and can be of sufficient magnitude to permanently damage components. ESD problems can be significantly reduced by the used of high conductivity shielding and proper termination of that shield.
