In an unbalanced system, the data contained in a series of pulses is input to the driver. The driver reproduces these pulses and sends them down the transmission line. If a noise spike of sufficient amplitude is picked up by the transmission line which acts like an antenna, the receiver just sees it as another pulse and reproduces the data plus an error.
