Capacitance is the ability to hold or store an electrical charge. In a cable, capacitance is a measure of the ability to store electrical energy. This property causes slower voltage transitions of the pulse being transmitted. Capacitance values are a function of the insulation, conductor spacing, and of the ground-signal conductor configuration. Capacitance limits the line length in digital applications and is the primary cause of rise time degradation (slower voltage transitions). Capacitance is specified in picofarads per foot (pF/ft).
