The AS3935 Franklin Lightning Sensor™ Demoboard is a fully operational handheld lightning sensor which is able to estimate the distance to the head of upcoming storms. Lightning events will trigger the AS3935 demo kit and will be shown on the LCD. The display will show detail information about approaching and departing storms and the actual distance to the head of the storm. The buzzer provides also audio signal in case events are detected.
The hardware is a low power design enabling long battery life time with the 3V coin cell CR2032. For easy debugging of the SPI interface, all the I/O lines of the AS3935 are accessible via a row of pin headers.
The GUI offers advanced register settings of the AS3935 that enables the user to adjust the sensor according to the environment. Diagnostic features as the automatic antenna tuning and the tuning of the RCO’s are implemented. The GUI also allows the user to access the volatile history that saves lightning events with their timestamp and distance.
The AS3935 Franklin Lightning Sensor™ Demoboard comes with an handheld Lightning Emulator Board in order to emulate presence of a storm. A far strike, mid strike and close strike can be emulated as well as a disturber and noise.to be evaluated for approaching storms. The US National Weather Bureau suggests the 30-30 rule when lightning is imminent (When a flash is seen and the thunder is heard less than 30 seconds later, the storm is within 10 km. Head immediately for a safe shelter. Stay in the shelter for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder you hear).
