The SparkFun Photon RedBoard has been based around the P1 Particle Module. The P1 is Particle's tiny Wi-Fi module that contains both the Broadcom Wi-Fi chip and a reprogrammable STM32F205RGY6 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. Each P1 comes pre-loaded with Particle OS firmware and includes their basic cloud service. It has a built-in antenna and a uFL connector, making optimization of RF designs easy.
The Photon RedBoard has all of the hardware peripherals needed for an IoT project; 8 Digital I/O pins, 6 Analog Inputs, UART, SPI and ARM JTAG hook-ups. Pins SDA, SCL, SCK, MISO, MOSI, SS, DAC, and WKP are broken out in the board for easier interfacing. The Photon RedBoard can be powered through the USB or the barrel jack. The on-board power regulator can handle anything from 4.5 to 15VDC. It is important to keep in mind that the Photon RedBoard utilizes the Arduino form factor, meaning it can be attached with many different Arduino shields available in the market.
